FAQ for AI.opensubtitles.com

Last Updated: December 3, 2024, 4:02 am

AI.opensubtitles.com is an online platform that utilizes artificial intelligence to transcribe and translate audio and video files. Users can easily convert their multimedia content into text and translate it into various languages.

In early 2023, a company approached me with the goal of automating the subtitling process for their extensive collection of software tutorial videos. They wanted to generate subtitles and translate them into multiple languages. In response, I developed a PHP backend, accessible through REST API, to automate audio track extraction and transcription using an AI model. Subsequently, I created a web front end using HTML5, Javascript, and WASM modules to provide users with a user-friendly means of extracting audio tracks from movie files and generating subtitles.

After discussions with the developer of OpenSubtitles.org, the largest public database for movie subtitles, we decided to host the platform on a subdomain. We integrated the user base from the main domain using a mechanism similar to OAuth2, allowing users of OpenSubtitles.org to log in to AI.OpenSubtitles.com with their main site credentials. At this stage, we introduced a credit-based payment system, utilizing the payment provider service from the main site.

Over the following months, I conducted extensive testing on various AI models for transcription and translation. The successful models were incorporated into the subtitle generator platform, providing users with a diverse range of choices. In July 2023, AI.OpenSubtitles.com was officially launched and has since experienced growth in both user numbers and the selection of available AI models.

As of September 2024, a new login option has been introduced. Now, in addition to logging in with their OpenSubtitles.org credentials, users can also sign in directly using their OpenSubtitles.com account.

Our platform makes it easy for users to upload their audio, video, or subtitle files. You can choose from various AI models and languages to generate subtitles or translate existing ones. Behind the scenes, our advanced algorithms ensure speedy and accurate transcriptions and translations. What makes us stand out is our use of client-side audio extraction from movies, thanks to FFmpeg wasm. This means we can generate subtitles faster and more efficiently than many other platforms, providing our users with a smooth and streamlined experience.

In addition to these features, our credit-based payment system adds another layer of convenience. Users have the flexibility to purchase credits, which are then utilized when accessing AI services. This pay-as-you-go approach ensures cost-effectiveness, allowing users to pay only for the specific services they need. The credits never expire, providing users with the freedom to integrate AI services seamlessly into their workflows without the pressure of expiration dates. This unique advantage empowers our users with control, flexibility, and personalized cost-efficiency in their interactions with our platform.

We support the following file formats for subtitles, video, and audio:

Type Supported Formats
Subtitle Files .srt, .vtt, .txt
Video Files .mp4, .mov, .avi, .mkv, .flv, .wmv, .webm, .m4v, .3gp
Audio Files .mp3, .wav, .aac, .ogg, .flac, .m4a, .wma, .amr

AI.opensubtitles.com supports a wide range of languages. Users can select the desired language for transcription based on their preferences.

Ensure that the selected language matches the spoken language of your file. Incorrect selections may lead to unusable results, as the AI relies on this setting to process transcription and translation accurately.

Our pricing structure is determined by the usage of credits, which is influenced by both the chosen AI model and the duration of the uploaded file. In the case of transcription, the calculation is based on seconds, with each AI model having a distinct rate per second. When dealing with subtitle files, the count is on written characters, excluding timestamps from the calculation.

Credits operate as a flexible and user-centric payment method, offering distinct advantages over traditional subscriptions. Users have the ability to purchase credits, which are then utilized when accessing AI services. The beauty of this system lies in its adaptability, allowing users to harness AI capabilities at their own pace without being tied to monthly or yearly subscriptions. These credits never expire, providing users with the freedom to use them whenever needed.

The longevity of credits ensures that users can seamlessly integrate AI services into their workflows without the pressure of expiration dates. Whether it's a short-term project or an ongoing requirement, the credits remain valid indefinitely. This flexibility aligns with varying user needs and eliminates the rush to utilize credits within a specific timeframe.

Furthermore, the credit-based system promotes cost-effectiveness by enabling users to pay for the precise services they consume. Unlike fixed subscription fees, credits are spent based on the specific AI services accessed and corresponding usage. This pay-as-you-go approach guarantees that users only pay for the services they require, offering a personalized and economical solution tailored to individual needs. In essence, credits empower users with control, flexibility, and cost-efficiency when utilizing AI services.

We offer two methods for translating subtitle files using DeepL AI: DeepL2 and regular DeepL translation. Here's how they differ:

DeepL2 Translation

  • How it works: The DeepL2 setting allows DeepL to handle the entire subtitle file directly. The file is parsed, translated, and output as a translated subtitle file—all within the DeepL service.
  • Advantages:
    • Processes the entire file at once, preserving context across the translation.
    • Optimized specifically for translating movie content, ensuring better accuracy and coherence.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Occasionally, files fail to process for unknown reasons (at least unknown to us).

Regular DeepL Translation

  • How it works: Our system parses the subtitle file and sends only the text portions to DeepL for translation. Once translated, our scripts recreate a subtitle file with the translated text.
  • Advantages:
    • Offers a reliable fallback option if DeepL2 encounters issues.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Limited to smaller text blocks per request due to API constraints.
    • If the text is split across multiple requests, there is a slight risk of losing context between blocks (e.g., the flow from the end of one block to the start of the next might not fully align).

If the transcription output is in the wrong language, ensure you’ve selected the spoken language of the audio file during the transcription step. Transcription and translation cannot be completed simultaneously. First, transcribe the file, then translate it into your desired language.

We regret any inconvenience caused, but it appears that the FFmpeg WASM audio extraction/format conversion task could not be successfully completed. This is likely due to FFmpeg WASM reaching its memory limit, influenced by OS or browser constraints.

FFmpeg WASM is an innovative technology enabling the use of FFmpeg, a robust multimedia processing tool, directly within the browser without requiring installation or server-side processing. However, FFmpeg WASM has limitations, particularly regarding the amount of memory it can utilize. Depending on your OS and browser settings, FFmpeg WASM might face challenges accessing sufficient memory for processing large or complex files, resulting in errors or failures.

Possible solutions:

  • Attempt the task again with a smaller file.
  • Retry the process on a system with more available memory.
  • Alternatively, you can manually extract the audio track using free, open-source software options such as:
    • Shutter Encoder: A cross-platform app (Windows, macOS) that easily extracts audio and converts it to MP3.
    • HandBrake: A cross-platform video conversion tool with audio extraction and MP3 conversion options.
